Seven Great Songs for Your Father Daughter Wedding Dance

by jaime on June 6, 2012

It’s almost as important as your first dance. He’s your Daddy, and you want it to be perfect. So here are a few that I recommend (as well as a cute reader recommendation!) you try on for size. And this time around, try not to dance on his feet too much.

“I Love” by Tom T. Hall – this was a reader-recommended song that actually made me a little girly. I thought it was such a cute song for a Father Daughter dance. Great recommendation, Nicole!

“Daddy, Dance With Me” by Chris Keith – it’s claimed that this is better than Butterfly Kisses. I think it’s a cute song, though not right for me… but I do agree, it’s an adorable song!

“I Loved Her First” by Heartland – I won’t lie, this song tends to get me a bit choked up.

“Gracie” by Ben Folds – finally, a non-country song! This is such a cute Ben Folds song, and I could see it being doubly awesome for a girl named Grace – but I think we could all pull it off.

“In the Heart of Every Girl” by Elton John – part of me wants to just go crazy unorthodox and play a song that my father and I used to dance to. This would be a compromise (we used to jam out to Elton John) that’s still cute.

“It Won’t Be Like This for Long” by Darius Rucker – this is a newer song, but I really expect it to become a classic Father Daughter Dance song. It’s a tearjerker!

And finally…

“Secret Garden” by Bruce Springsteen – a song that I love. A musician that both my father and I adore. And it’s kind of darling. This could be construed as a little too “romantic,” but I think it’s gorgeous.

So, what I really want to know is what did YOU dance to with your father? And, if you’re planning a wedding, what are your Father Daughter dance song ideas?

Love,
Jaime

There is a little known song by the name of “Good Morning Again” by Midnight to Twelve (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxGeoYnIadc) that I want to dance to with my dad. My entire family loves this song but not many other people know it so it seems special to me. I also really like “I Wish You Peace” by The Eagles (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVoOk68T1SI) as a father/daugher or mother/son dance :) I think that is what my guy and his mother are going to dance to…

Hi Erica, I realize this is late but I just came across this blog. Its so bizarre you pick M212 as your band of choice. Jon is my cousin! I told him I read this and he thinks it is really awesome! I was so excited to see you picked that song. Great choice :) Good luck on your wedding!

My dad and I had our father daughter dance choreographed and we danced to Frank Sinatra, “The Way You Look Tonight.” It was nice to spend some quality time with my dad before the big day and we will forever have wonderful memories of our father daughter dance!

“Daddy’s hands” by Holly Dunn has made me tear up since I was a little girl. I’m not sure what my dad and I will dance to, but this is a great one.

Originally I had thought to use “You Make Me Smile” by Uncle Kracker, since it’s sweet and upbeat and not overtly romantic (and not country!) but then my father suggested some Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, so we may be doing that instead.

Our father-daughter dance is going to be doubly special because my new husband will be dancing with our daughter at the same time, in their first “daddy-daughter” dance.

Another great father/daughter dance, at least in my opinion, is “There Goes My Life” by Kenny Chesney. But I am using “I Loved Her First” by Heartland for me and my dad. And then “My Little Girl” by Tim McGraw for me and my step-dad.

My father/daughter dance will be to Dave Matthews Band, “You and Me”. Him and I both love DMB and have been to a few DMB shows together so this song is light and sweet and reminds me of my daddy. <3

Me too! its such a beautiful song, and when i was younger my dad bought me the “butterfly kisses” book, so its always been the plan!

Nicole June 19, 2012 at 5:57 pm

Although I’m giving my father complete control over the song we dance to, I personally have a few favorites:
My little girl- Tim McGraw (we’re a country family)
Wind Beneath my Wings- Bette Midler … although this may be “typical,” it makes me cry everytime I hear it.
You Raise Me Up- Josh Groban…a more modern “twist” to wind beneath my wings…I also suggested this for my fiance and his mother since it’s gender neutral and doesn’t require a father-daughter dance due to specific lyrics.

My dad and I are dancing to Bob Dylan’s Daughter in the Water! It really describes our relationship, and is untraditional and upbeat! So perfect for us!

My dad used to play the guitar and sing “When I’m With You” by Sheriff. It’s supposed to be a love song, but it has special meaning for us. Another great one is “Little Miss Magic” by Jimmy Buffett – if you haven’t heard it, you should really take a listen!

I’ve been considering a few, my dad is a classic rock fan and neither of us is very sentimental, so I don’t want anything too cheesy/mushy. The best I’ve found so far is “I Wish You Peace” by The Eagles. It’s a beautiful song and would work well for a father/daughter dance, mother/son dance, or both.

Forever My Father by Go Radio will definitely be my daddy’s and my dance.

Reply

Liz November 17, 2012 at 1:59 pm

Mine too. It (unfortunately) sums up my Dad and I’s sometimes rocky relationship, while still expressing how much I love him and miss being closer to him. I tried searching for a video of a Dad and daughter dancing to this song, but couldn’t find anything.

My sister danced to “Butterfly Kisses” by Bob Carlisle, so I wanted to leave that as a special song for them. My sister then found a gorgeous song called “Cinderella” by Steven Curtis Chapman… it gets me teary the whole way through. Absolutely beautiful… my Dad is an amazing dancer & I’ve always loved dancing with him, so it fits perfectly for me I think =)

My college roommate danced with her dad to Cinderella. I cried the whole time because of the story behind the song (he wrote it for his little girl who was killed soon after it was written).

“Stealing Cinderella” by Chuck Wicks

“She would always be

Playing Cinderella
Riding her first bike
Bouncing on the bed
And looking for a pillow fight

Running through the sprinkler
With a big popsicle grin
Dancing with her dad
Looking up at him”

I’m not married yet, and this isn’t really a “daddy-daughter” song, but my dad and I will be dancing to “Don’t Take the Girl” by Tim McGraw. He and I always listened to that song when I was little and we went to our favorite pizza place together.

I surprised my Dad with “Everywhere” by Fleetwood Mac. My Dad always told me that we used to dance to that song on our front porch when I was little. When I was planning, I remembered that song and had my DJ play that right before “My Wish” by Rascal Flatts. We also invited all of the Father/Daughters and Mother/Sons out to the dance floor for the last half of each dance. It was perfect!

Ally July 11, 2012 at 8:21 pm

I’m in between two songs to use for my father/daughter dance. They seem like rather odd choices to anyone that doesn’t know the story behind them, but they hold special meaning as they are the songs that I used to dance with my dad to when I was little. Even as a teenager when he would play those songs I would go out into the living room and dance with him. The songs are Tears of a Clown by the English Beat and Say That You Love Me by Loudon Wainwright III.

My father and I danced to Nat & Natalie King Cole’s “Unforgettable” duet. We danced to that song at my hs graduation. (This is the only song we’ve ever danced to and we’ve only danced together twice.) My step-dad and I are closer. I wanted to dance to our favorite – Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World,” but felt it was too short. I had my dj insert the instrumental portion of Percy Jackson’s “Moon River.” It was unique and beautiful, sounding as one piece.

I have told my dad that when I get married, I’m going to use “I Loved Her First” by Heartland. I love it and it definitely chokes me up, but that’s just a cover up for the song I’m really going to use.
The actual song I’m going to use is “Love Without End, Amen” by George Strait. It may be considered a song for father and son since that’s how it was written, but it has special meaning for us. Since the song was pretty much brand new when I was born, my dad heard it after I was born when he left the hospital to take my brother home (poor guy was tired, but didn’t want to leave, haha). He also heard a few more times that day, I believe (since I was born at 3:34 am). I hope he likes the surprise.
Another good one would be “Daddy’s Girl” by Red Sovine. Whenever it came on (when I was older), he would turn it up and sing it to me. Of course, I’d just shake my head. Haha.

My Papa doesn’t know it yet, but he and I will probably end up dancing to landslide by Fleetwood Mac when I get married. When I was little, and learning how to play guitar, he would sit next to me with his guitar and play it over and over while I tried to mimic him, and as I got older, he would do the solo licks, while I played the chords and we sing it together every year on Christmas. He’s always told me it reminds him of me, and in turn I always think of him when it come on. If ya’ll can’t tell, I’m a bit of a daddy’s girl haha.

Walk with you by Edwin McCain

Chorus
I’ll take this slow sweet walk with you
You’ll let go of my hand to say: I do
He will discover just how blessed a life can be
I know cuz all those years ago
Someone handed you to me

Every step that we take
Brings back the memories
Winter snows and horse shows
Dancing on the beach
I can’t help thinking that I’m the lucky one
You’re still my baby daughter
And now I’ve gained a son

Chorus
I’ll take this slow sweet walk with you
You’ll let go of my hand to say : I do
He will discover just how blessed a life can be
I know ‘cause all those years ago
Your mom handed you to me

Don’t miss a chance to put each other first
Now that you’ve vowed for better or for worse
Don’t let the beauty of this life pass you by
In the times of trouble you’ll stand side by side

Chorus
I’ll take this slow sweet walk with you
You’ll let go of my hand to say : I do

I picture a slow sweet walk yet to be
When you’ll take my hand and say : Daddy come see
Then you’ll know what it felt like
You won’t believe what it feels like
Then you’ll know what it felt like
When she handed you to me

She handed you to me

My Little Girl by Tim McGraw has to be one of the greatest father daughter songs there is. It chokes me up every time! It’s a beautiful song and makes the listeners reflect on their relationship with their dad. Comes from the dad’s perspective. Really, really fitting for me because it talks about always being daddy’s little girl no matter what and always knowing where home is, growing up fast, taking the world. It is such an axing song.. I love it so much. Even talks about a boy coming and asking for the girls hand and the dad making sure he’s right for her, but between the dad and daughter, no one will ever be good enough for her. Love love love!

I’m considering “You Are My Sunshine” for the father daughter dance, but will probably end up dancing to that with my son. It has some significance to all three of us, because of my Mom (who passed away a little over a year ago), so it will definitely be a song we’ll use in some way during the wedding.

After seeing this list though, we’ll probably go with “I Loved Her First” by Heartland. I’m not a fan of country music, but my Dad is. It really isn’t a very twangy song, which is one of the things that bothers me about a lot of country music, so it doesn’t bother me. The lyrics are beautiful and touching and definitely make me think of my Dad.
