Today we get to spoil you with another wonderful review AND giveaway! If you don’t know her name yet, you will – Kirsten Kuehn makes some of the most beautiful bridal accessories and you’ll fall fast for her pieces (I certainly have!). We’ve featured Kirsten’s work as a part of a bridal hairstyle inspiration post, but now you can learn more and enter to win something stunning here on The Excited Bride!

1. Tell us how you started Kirsten Kuehn Designs.
I left my small town of Libertyville, IL. at 18 for LA in hopes of pursuing a career in the fashion industry. Looking back, my parents were terrified and I was totally clueless but something about Hollywood really intrigued me. I attended FIDM and it changed my life completely. I took an entrepreneurship course where we were assigned to design and market a product or line of goods. Since I was already making & selling headbands on Etsy as a hobby, I figured why not use that as a mold. My teacher taught and inspired me to keep working and not give up. That business model I created in that class formed what I do today!

2. There are a ton of ways for a bride to accessorize on her big day, and you’ve had so many brides in your designs. What makes your items stand out?
I love making custom belts! They are so much fun for me to design, and it’s hard for me to put them down until they are finished. Wearing a garment or accessory that is one of kind, for me is indescribable and makes me feel like I stand out from the crowd. Knowing that it was made just for me and that it won’t be duplicated for others to wear is a really cool feeling.

3. What advice would you give soon-to-be brides when it comes to finding their perfect look?
I would say think “classic” and stay true to your signature style. You don’t want to look back on your wedding photos in embarrassment. Stick to timeless silhouettes and stay away from anything too trendy. In my opinion, you can never go wrong with Old Hollywood glamour. When it comes to hair and makeup keep it simple, we want to see your natural beauty. It’s important to remember that makeup is meant to enhance your features not transform them. Basically, don’t overdo it and when in doubt ask yourself “WWGD” – What Would Grace Do?

4. So many of your designs can be worn beyond the wedding day. Have any tips for our brides on repurposing their pieces for everyday looks?
Our pieces are very versatile and can easily be worn after your big day! Sashes can be worn with different dresses & can double as headbands. From sundresses to jeans and tee, our headbands can really glam up everyday outfits. Bouquet wraps can double as bracelets which also add a nice touch to everyday wear or a fancy night out. Unity Candles can be displayed as a keepsake in your home, I have them all over my house! Ring bearer pillows look great as a glamorous decorative accent on your bed. Shoe clips are my favorite because they work with almost all of my shoes, and I always get a ton of compliments when wearing them.

5. Of all the pieces you’ve designed, tell us about your favorite.
I’d have to say that my favorite piece is a crystal embellished mask that I made for an editorial in Prestige Magazine (check out the pictures above and left!). It was a New Year’s themed shoot so they asked for a masquerade mask with my own sparkly spin. It’s so fabulous that I want to wear it every year on Halloween for the rest of my life!

6. Any hints on what we should expect for new wedding trends in the near future?
Baby Blue, Light Pink, and Vibrant Red (a Chinese wedding tradition) bridal gowns were all over the runways this year for the Spring 2013 lines. Another interesting thing I noticed is that black accents are still making an appearance. Vera Wang first started using black sashes & gloves back in 2010 and then shocked us all with her collection of black bridal dresses last year for her Fall 2012 collection. Many designers are continuing the black trend but are using much more subtle variations. I also noticed floral prints, short dresses, as well as peplum skirts. My personal favorite is the lace portrait or illusion back that I’ve been seeing a lot of, it’s a chic way of embracing a trend without being too bold.
